Andrey Zvyagintsev Film Retrospective: Elena + Q&A with the Director

In March 2025, ZIMA presents three films by Andrey Zvyagintsev—one of the most iconic contemporary directors—in London. The retrospective program will include the cult classics Leviathan, Loveless, and Elena. Elena is a subtle yet intense drama about the clash between morality and survival. The film tells the story of a woman faced with a difficult choice between family loyalty and her own moral principles. With a restrained, almost cold approach, Zvyagintsev unveils deep social and psychological conflicts, illustrating how desperation and class divisions can drive a person to extreme measures. Elena has received numerous awards, including the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, and remains one of the director’s most significant works. Following the screening, audiences will have the opportunity to discuss the film with the director in a Q&A session.
